UBM Canon to Produce Advanced Design and Manufacturing Event in Montréal

Co-located shows patterned on successful Canadian launch in Toronto

Los Angeles, CA, USA (September 27, 2011) – International event organizer UBM Canon has announced plans to produce an advanced design and manufacturing event of co-located and synergistic trade shows and conferences November 14-15, 2012 at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal.

The event is patterned on UBM Canon’s successful inaugural and biennial Canadian event this past June in Toronto, which attracted nearly 7,000 industry professionals and is already rebooked for 60 percent of its exhibit space in 2013.

“The Toronto show appeared to be a sellout in terms of exhibitors, and the attendance of visitors was outstanding,” said Terry McKone, Technical Sales Manager of Johnson Matthey Precision Castings.  “Already, we have had serious meetings about our services, with significant business potential.”

“Generally I don’t commit to a show during its inaugural year, but because this was a UBM Canon show I took the chance and was not disappointed–in fact I was delighted,” said Lee Spring Director of Global Marketing Helene Herman. “Design & Manufacturing Canada proved to be one of the best shows I have done in my eight years here. Not just leads, but high quality leads and genuine interest in our product offering.   We have signed up for the 2013 event and increased our booth size.”

The Montréal lineup includes the long-running (35 years) Expoplast show, Design & Manufacturing Montréal, Contract Manufacturing Expo, Automation Technology Expo (ATX) Montréal, AeroCon, Sustainability in Manufacturing, PACKEX Montréal, and Process Technology/Powder Bulk Solids (PTX/PBS) Montréal.Click here to view the floorplan.

“Montréal is the largest city in the province of Québec and the second largest in the whole country. The province has its own GDP of $301 billion,” explained UBM Canon’s North American events director Joshua Dome. “So an event in Québec is the perfect complement to the foundation laid this year in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area).” The traditional 75/25 Ontario/Québec split in terms of Canada’s overall manufacturing output confirms this well positioned strategy to serve Canadian markets.

In Québec, manufacturing is a key driver of the economy and employs one in every six workers. The manufacturing industry accounts for 19 percent of economic activity in the province. Québec manufacturers’ share of total Canadian production is a minimum of 20 percent, up to as high as 60 percent. Québec manufacturers spent $2.8 billion in 2009 on capital machinery and equipment purchases with the bulk of this money going for advances in automated equipment and systems for improved product quality, enhanced productivity, and lower operation costs.

Sixty-two percent of overall Canadian aerospace industry production takes place in Québec with 234 aerospace companies employing more than 40,000 workers and shipped products and equipment in 2009 valued at $12.4 billion. The quality and concentration of aerospace companies in Québec place the province on par with other world-class centers of aerospace manufacturing. The province ranks fifth in the world in aerospace employment and sixth in sales. Leading companies in the area include Bombardier Aerospace, General Electric, Pratt & Whitney, Bell Helicopter Textron, L3 Communications, and Lockheed Martin, to name a few.

In 2008, there were approximately 649 plastics processing establishments in Québec producing more than 26 percent of all plastic products made in Canada. Its plastics processors employ 21,336 and generate an annual payroll of $926 million. The sector spent $2.6 billion on materials and supplies used in production. According to the Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA), Québec processors posted 2009 sales of $7.7 billion. Food processing is Québec’s largest manufacturing sector with 2,000 manufacturing establishments employing nearly 63,000. The sector generated sales of $22.5 billion in 2009, and in recent years, the industry has seen major investments–in the hundreds of millions of dollars–in both new and expanded manufacturing facilities.

The chemical industry is Québec’s fourth largest manufacturing sector with 825 production facilities, 20,000-plus employees, and an annual payroll of $1.3 billion. Spending on materials and supplies is $5.4 billion with annual sales of $11.7 billion. A subsector of chemicals, pharmaceuticals manufacturing in the region generated $4 billion in sales in 2008, while spending $946 million on manufacturing materials and supplies.
