Snugly tucked between Northport Harbor, Long Island Sound and hundreds of miles of woods and marshland to the east, Northport Village in Suffolk County, New York is well-known throughout the northeast for its scenic parks and beaches, secluded waterfront and quaint 19th century architecture. A local native, Anthony Torggler has spent his entire life reveling in the area’s beauty, which now includes a bird’s eye view of the nearby landscape from his new 1,340 sq. ft. deck situated outside the family’s four-story home and surrounding his newly installed built-in swimming pool.
“I truly enjoy everything about the surroundings,” says Torggler. “In fact, the view seems even more magnificent from my deck, which I built myself in my spare time. The added pleasure comes from designing our own landscaping experience, which our entire family can enjoy together.”
A 20-year veteran of the healthcare industry, Torggler’s deckbuilding skills are self-taught and learned mainly through the aid of do-it-yourself materials. The deck itself, which was designed with Akaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ)-rated pressure treated wood, took approximately three weeks to complete and only minutes to pass the inspection of the local building inspector.
“Amazingly, one of the more difficult tasks was finding the proper type and size of stainless steel fasteners that are mandated for use by our city’s building codes. The close proximity to the water combined with the corrosive qualities of the treated lumber can compromise the integrity of lesser materials over time. So, it was imperative to not only meet code, but also create an undeniably safe environment for friends and family that will last the next 25 years,” adds Torggler.
After scouring the Internet for the proper resources, Torggler came across the website of Manasquan Premium Fasteners, a leading national provider of stainless steel fasteners to the residential, commercial and marine construction industries. Shortly thereafter, Torggler was on the phone with Bob Dey, who co-founded and operates Manasquan with his wife Linda, worked directly with him to identify the proper fasteners for his specific decking application. “The customer service was outstanding,” further explains Torggler. “In addition to thoroughly understanding my needs and providing all forms of helpful deckbuilding tips, Bob worked with me to identify the right selection of fasteners and even called Simpson on my behalf to obtain several custom stainless steel angles. I’ve never dealt with anyone else that supplied this level of support, experience and products. In addition, everything arrived one day after the order and most importantly, I couldn’t be happier with the final results.”
As for the future, Torggler has already begun his next project, which includes fencing his yard with AZEK composite decking material and again working directly with Manasquan to meet all his fastener needs.
