F. Zimmermann to Present its Broad-Ranging Milling Expertise at IMTS
Every industry, whether it is automotive engineering, aircraft construction or modelmaking, has unique demands when it comes to milling. F. Zimmermann GmbH is very familiar with these sectors and will be presenting its comprehensive know-how at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago from September 12 to 17. With the help of machine models it will be displaying solutions for a wide range of applications.
An example is the innovative M3 ABC three-axis milling head, which Zimmermann developed in order to accelerate the production of aluminum components for the aircraft industry. The swivel angles of the rotation axes are designed to permit six-axis simultaneous machining of workpieces with a constant advance rate. The swiveling movements are very small and the surface quality is excellent. The M3 ABC is integrated in the FZ100 portal milling machine, for example, where it boosts productivity in the machining of aluminum, composites and modelmaking materials. Subsequent deburring and polishing are unnecessary, which means that users can fabricate standard components up to 50 percent faster than with conventional two-axis fork-type heads in five-axis simultaneous operation. One company that has chosen this solution is Triumph Structures Wichita, a versatile manufacturer of airframe products with high surface quality that can have total lengths of more than 25 meters.
F. Zimmermann has developed a new machine, the FZ40 compact, especially for customers that do heavy-duty cutting like toolmaking. Its primary applications are efficient machining of steel, cast iron and titanium. The inherently rigid monoblock structure means that it can be set up easily and rapidly. It is based on the proven FZ33 compact and offers the same advantages. The machine features the powerful new VH60 2-axis milling head with an output of 63 kW and a torque of 300 Nm. It is available with the HSK-A100 tool holder.
Zimmermann will also be presenting its first 5-axis horizontal machining center, the FZH400. The new model range is particularly useful for efficient machining of standard components for the aircraft industry. The core technology of the FZH400 is a robust, water-cooled traveling column. Its rigidity increases as the material is penetrated. This ensures a perfectly constant geometry along the Z axis as well as maximum rigidity in sensitive areas of the workpiece. The user can thus work very quickly and obtain excellent surfaces. Already in the standard version, the machining center features a pallet handling system with an area for setting up pallets during machine time. The handling system, also newly designed, enables reliable transport of pallets without sagging and is very suitable for longer pallet lengths. Zimmermann supplies this production solution in a turnkey state.
