Minnesota farmer likes his 40-foot hydraulic door from Schweiss Doors

Gary Seehusen, a third-generation farmer who has worked 1,600 acres six miles north of Danube, Minn., since 1988, has seen considerable improvements to his farm site and equipment since his father and grandfather started farming the land over a century ago. Corn, soybeans, sweetcorn and occasional pea crops grow well on the prime agricultural land.

One of his most recent improvements included having Country Wide Lumber of Hector, Minn., plan a new 72-foot by 144-foot machine shed with a sturdy hydraulic door from Schweiss Doors, measuring 40 feet by 17 feet, 5 inches. The door is equipped with photo eye sensors, a remote opener and two 3-foot by 3-foot sliding windows.

“I chose a hydraulic door over a bifold door in order to get the best headroom,” Seehusen says. “I first became acquainted with Schweiss Doors while visiting Farmfest. The door opens reasonably fast, it’s quiet, seals well and the quality and workmanship are excellent. You’re putting a door on that is built to last 50 years or more.”

Two heavy-duty cylinders lift Seehusen’s Schweiss one-piece door quickly and quietly.

His post-frame building is an attractive two-tone gray color. To bring in additional natural light, it has four windows on the sidewalls.

“Jim Seidl and his crew (at Ebbers & Seidel Construction of Bird Island) put up the building for Country Wide Lumber,” Seehusen says. “They’ve built so many and know how to put extra bracing in to support the door and make it easier for Schweiss to install it. There’s a lot of weight there when you have 18 feet sticking out there.”

With the hydraulic door opened or closed, Seehusen made sure it would be well lit with proper interior lighting and natural lighting from the door windows and four sidewall windows.

Seehusen also mentioned that he liked the Schweiss hydraulic pump unit that he mounted a few feet off the floor between the main door and the walk door. He mentioned seeing another manufacturer’s pump that he saw mounted high on the sidewalls – not nearly as handy and compact as the Schweiss pump. He also noted the people at Schweiss Doors consistently have been only a phone call away to quickly answer any questions he’s had on the door.

“It’s a good door,” he says. “I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Two 3-foot by 3-foot sliding windows allow natural light into the building and when open also provide some ventilation. His hydraulic pump is mounted between the walk door and hydraulic door. Country Wide Lumber pays particular attention to having the door braced well.
