ESAB Enhances Purus™ Copper Coated S-6 Wire

To Improve Uptime In High-Volume Mig Applications

To increase welding uptime in high-volume and robotic MIG and pulsed MIG welding applications, ESAB today introduced an enhanced version of its Purus™ copper-coated solid wire that delivers more consistent feeding and welding performance. The improved Purus has an optimized copper coating application that reduces contact tip bore wear, copper flaking, and clogged tips and liners.

“Through investments and continuous improvements, the next generation of Purus wires increases contact tip life so that users need to change tips less frequently compared to other wires,” said Joe Cacioppo, Director of Global Product Management, ESAB. “Purus lowers downtime and contact tip costs, particularly in automated and demanding, high-amperage or high-volume applications such as automotive, mobile machinery fabrication and general construction.”

ESAB’s Purus S-6 wire has an optimized copper coating application that reduces contact tip bore wear, copper flaking and clogged tips and liners, improving uptime in high-volume and robotic MIG welding.

Purus is available in diameters from 0.8 to 1.6 mm (.030 to 1/16th in.) and sold in 18 kg (40 lb.) spools, or 250 kg and 500 kg (550 lb. and 1,100 lb) Marathon Pac™ bulk wire systems. The wire is available in two formulations. Purus 42 is classified as an AWS A5.18 ER70S-6/ EN ISO 14341-A G3Si1 wire; it meets all the technical requirements for an ER70S-6 wire, enabling users to change wires without requalification. Purus 46 is classified as an AWS A5.18 ER70S-6/EN ISO 14341-A G4Si1 solid wire; it has a slightly higher manganese and silicon content than Purus 42 to increase the weld metal strength.

“The next generation of Purus wires significantly improves welding uptime and is a key addition to the existing Purus wire features available already. All Purus wires deliver excellent arc start ignition and arc stability,” adds Cacioppo. “It also features an enhanced metallurgy to reduce the formation of silica islands so that they self-release or easily brush off. It can reduce post-weld cleaning time and unplanned downtime associated with spatter and reduces or eliminates downtime for removing silica islands in multi-pass welding.”

Purus offers exceptional batch-to-batch consistency due to tighter control of raw materials and the manufacturing process. Purus wire provides good wetting action so that the weld puddle flows nicely and with a smooth transition at the weld toe. It creates a better bead profile and better surface appearance, so it can reduce or eliminate the need for TIG dressing or grinding to remove stress concentrations.
